Ashbourne News, 22nd November 1918: Samuel Smith had previously been a member of the Ashbourne Voluntary Aid Detachment for some years before the war, and in September 1915, he volunteered for home service with the Royal Army Medical Corps. For two years he served in hospitals in England, before being transferred to the Sherwood Foresters as a machine gunner. He was sent to Italy in December 1917, and then later to France. He originally came from Mayfield in Staffordshire, but had lived in Mappleton for eight years, and he was married with five children.
